• What a shame. A Lovely pub, very welcoming landlady. pub decorated beautifully for valentines day and every effort was made except for the food. The chicken was very dry and unpleaseant. If the pub had a new good chef I'm sure it would be packed out.

• Under new management. The old black lion has had a run of bad management over the years and having avoided for several years I unfortunately found it is still in need of attention. Upon arrival we were greeted by the current land lady who proceeded to describe the food available to us and make recommendations... First Impressions. The resturant is furnished with an assortment of traditional wooden tables and modern red and black faux leather chairs that have seen better days. The furnishing and decor are not sympathetic to the age or style of the building and detract from the experience. The cutlery is old and worn and in need of replacing. The level of cleanliness in the dining areas is acceptable with little or no dust on surfaces. Dining. Expect long waits and sporadic delivery if eating in a group of more than a few, or if there are more than a couple of tables of other customers. The menu is somewhat underwhelming with a limited mixture of traditional pub food, and traditional pub food with a predictable difference. The specials board is bland and written in unnecessarily atrocious hand writing. The food was described on arrival as fresh, being hand made and home cooked by the chef but I suspect that this is not entirely true. The meals entering the resturant are presented in a standard fashion with certain aspects having such uniformity that some of the produce is undoubtedly cash and carry or supermarket bought, not home made. Don't be alarmed to hear the recurrent audible ding of microwaves producing the ''home cooked'' food as you stand at the bar. The taste was reflective of the pubs atmosphere and environment with dishes feeling dated and lacking any real depth or definition. The pricing is not outrageous but is not justified through cumulative averages in service. Drinking. The selection of beverages available is predictable with a wine list of overpriced bad wines. The Verdict. All in all The Old Black Lion at Gedney will currently lead to disappointment for the majority of diners. *One Star Pub Critic
