• Firstly the initial impression as you walk in is certainly wow; sadly for our party this all went downhill fairly quickly. We were a party of 5 on a quiet Monday night with 3 other couples coming and going whilst we were there and the service we received was slow and blasé. We eventually ordered some red wine at £16 a bottle which when opened was quite cold. We mentioned this to the waiter who just looked at us bemused and said it’s from the bar. When challenged and asked if he had any warmer reds he just shrugged and stood there with an embarrassed smile, and was obviously not sure what to do, so after a pregnant pause waiting for him to offer a solution, which he didn’t, we ordered our food. Now you would think that with the mouth-watering prices that this fairly new Indian come Thai Restaurant miles from anywhere charges they would be super friendly and attentive. Sadly, however you would be wrong. The food when it came looked good enough to eat and for the best part it was, if not certainly different to any Indian I have tasted before. I know this is subjective but you can only go on what you have had and tried before, and I for one have had much better Indian cuisine for a lot less money. I also had to send my plate back as it has a noticeable chip on it which had the waiter checked the plate he would have seen it. One meal had a Nan bread included but was not brought and had to be asked for, which by the time it arrived most of the party had pretty much finished the meal. I also had to send a rice dish back as it was dry and crunchy. We had other issues with service too, which I want bore you with but it’s suffice to say that when I challenged these I was made to feel that I was in the wrong. We asked for the check and when it arrived I noticed that they were charging 2% for accepting credit cards. This is not currently highlighted on their in house or takeaway menus and I asked to see the manager who informed that it was new policy since the beginning of the year and they were waiting for new menus to arrive to reflect this. When I challenged that this was nowhere made clear before we ordered, he just said that I was being rude, and he had never been challenged about this before, and anyway they didn’t put any cover charge or gratuity on. Oh lucky me, like that was doing me a favour! I did wonder after I left how many customers had not challenged the charge and have never gone back. The prices here are high enough (pretty much double compared with other local Establishments). So all in all not a great experience for us and if you live in the Ilminster area then I would recommend that you use one the two Indian Restaurants in town and save yourself the trouble, possible disappointment, and greater expense by NOT using the Lopen Raj.
