  • 4 star reviewIn the dystopian era of the mega-pub chain, each with less individuality than a McDonalds, the John Bull is something of a refreshing change. A little bit "life on Mars" in that it hasn't really changed in the past 30 years. Small Sunday carvery setup, but everything you really needed. Vegetarian option was an extra Yorkshire Pud, but all tasted pretty good. Puddings - well I always liked supermarket cheesecake so no problem there. No card payments. All that was missing were the old dimpled beer glasses. Staff all very friendly and welcoming. Overall a good meal and an enjoyable experience. Thumbs up from me, for nostalgia and reasonable grub.

  • 5 star reviewdecided to give this pub another chance after it changed hands- glad we did, sunday carvery is lovely ,great choice of veg, friendly greeting when we go in and nice atmosphere, new owners are working hard to improve the pub- we've been several times now and have not been disappointed

  • 1 star reviewNot impressed at all. Ordered an all day breakfast today, 9 December 2013 at 13.45 and was told it won't be long, Sat and waited, asked if it would be much longer at 14.10, eventually I was told at 14.20 it was ready, 14.26 I had to leave and return to work hungry, as the food had still not arrived. I got to my car and was told if I called back my money would be refunded. Friendly but lacking in experience, will not be returning for my money back and will not be recommending to work colleagues. A pity really as it is handy for lunch breaks, but will definitely not be returning.

  • 1 star reviewWe visited recently on a Saturday evening for a meal with friends. The meals were absolutely terrible. Two of us had ordered sirloin steaks - it couldn't even have been braising steak. When we complained Don Stewart picked up my knife and fork and cut some steak to sample it (can you believe it) - His words "There's nothing wrong with that" He then proceeded to try my friend's steak (also with her knife and fork) and again said there was nothing wrong with it. The smell of the steaks was also awful. The health inspector should be called and asked to take a visit.

  • 1 star reviewBeer is cheap, but so is every thing else. This is the place if you have no idea how to cook yourself. Take a coat because it is freezing

  • 5 star reviewPerfect venue for a wedding reception event - we had our wedding reception at the John Bull Inn, on a Friday afternoon the 28th of December 2012 at lunchtime - 12:30. It was a small party, just fourteen guests, and it turned out to be absolutely perfect. Management staff were very accommodating in that we were allowed to bring our own decorations (flowers, balloons, etc. etc.) at nine on the evening before the event, and take down their Christmas decorations. We brought in and played our own CD compilation of music, using their equipment. We brought in our own wedding cake, and that was also an optional dessert, with coffee or tea, which was great. The carvery meal offered a choice of four meats, six veggies and three sauces plus gravy, all done to perfection by the owner and his wife (Don and Michelle, and served by them (buffet style - you fetch your own food, but the meats are being cut and served by the chef /owner). Plus Points: PRIVACY - we had the dining room and food serving to ourselves, even though we were only a small party. Reasonbly priced - very good value for money. Excellent food, locally sourced and produced. Catering for children: we had a one year old and a 3 year old, and that was no problem at all. Friendly and personal service. We are from Moorends and we can fully recommend this pub for small intimate occasions such as our wedding reception. PS: We've never met either Don or Michelle before we actually booked the venue!

  • 1 star reviewif you like lumpy mashed potatoes (with no milk or butter to cream them) a chipped coffee cup, dirty sugar bowl and a spoon coated in sugar that has obviously been used to stir something with first then this is the place to go

  • 1 star reviewVisited the John Bull one Saturday evening for a meal with friends - we wish we hadn't. The meal honestly was one of the worst we've ever had, and when we complained the owner just wasn't interested.
